Blog Response #3
Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot. Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book. What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down. What will you always remember about this book?
Chinese Handcuffs. I became hooked in the book when Dillon starts to try and fix Jens problem with T.B by getting rid of him. I think it's nuts how when dillion tries to do something to help Jen she has a bomb go off in her head and hits him till she feels like being done. I think dillion did the right thing but jen doesn't come from his point of view before exploding. I also think dillion went the farthest he could to help Jen especially going to random strangers that are good in their fields just to help her friend. Also Dillion saved Jens life the night of the state championship game when she tried to suicide off the water tower while destroying his body in the process. What i will always remember about this book is you can't always know someone or there experiences well enough to know there full story.
ReplyDeleteI also in some way became hooked when my character Eric started to try to help Sarah and she would push back everytime he tried to help.
DeleteThis sounds really interesting. Good thing dillion saved her. and yes i agree you may not always know what someone else is going through. Dillion sounds like a hero in your book.
DeleteI did not get this far in the book yet but this really makes me want to read more of the book Chinese Handcuffs. I also liked what you mentioned at the end of what part you will remember.
Deletechinese handcuffs seems to really impress you and good thing dillion saved the women makes me want to get into chinese handcuffs as well.
DeleteEarly on after killing the cat Preston said how he crossed a line and he never wanted to cross it again. Then right before his suicide he mention how he crossed that line again when he got a girl raped by the bikers over a comment he made. I have not read up to point where you have yet but, "getting rid of" TB doesn't sound good. I'm assuming he wasn't able to get him arrested and resorted to violence. I can infer this from his impulsive behavior that has kept on being brought up. Maybe he didn't take it to heart when Coach Sherman told him to work on his impulsiveness. "Responses are one thing; impulses are another.". Maybe this is the point when Dillon responded the wrong way due to his protective impulses for Jen and this is his crossing of the line again. Hopefully this prediction doesn't end up being true and Dillon can learn from his brother's mistakes and forge a better path onward for himself.
DeleteIn the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes the part that hooked me was when I read more about Sarah and how she was not talking. This part hooked me because I needed to find out why Sarah wasn't talking anymore, what happened to her face, and what happened to her mom. Chris Crutcher made what happened a mystery and only gave little hints as to what happened to Sarah, and it kept me wanting more. There were some intense parts where they were having a heated discussion or when we would find out a little more about Sarah that made me want to keep reading and not put the book down. I will always remember finding out how Sarah got burnt, when Sarah's dad went crazy on Eric, and Sarah finally getting the justice she deserved.
ReplyDeleteI think chris crutcher is a good author because all his books are based off of true stories, The way he can transform a short conversation with someone into a chapter book is something i could never do but i would read all his books but i don't like reading unless i have to
DeleteAs i was reading the book i started to learn what happened to Sarah, the mystery of the whole thing is what made the book so good to me. so i am glad that you felt that way as well.
DeleteSounds like a good book u picked out there because seems like Sarah goes through tough times and over comes them eventually.
Deletethis part was very intresting for me aswell i liked how we got flash backs of her while she wasnt talking so we could understand the character better.
DeleteThose are all very memorable moments in the book that will not be forgotten. I also agree that Crutcher did do a very good job at making Sarah into a mystery and keeping us hooked by just giving us little hints along the way.
DeleteI agree this book made me not want to put it down at certain parts. It's very intense and there were so many moments I was extremely shocked.
DeleteChris Crutcher's writing really shines through in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. The mix of suspense, mystery, drama, and comedy, flows naturally with the story and made me not want to put the book down.
DeleteThis also sounds a lot like Chinese handcuffs because of all the mystery, there are many parts that keep you wondering and I think that is a big part in helping keep readers interested.
DeleteI was also very hooked on waiting to find out what really had happened to Sarah and the truth about her father. Criss Cruncher did very well at keeping it hidden and only dropping the hints.
DeleteI became hooked to running loose once boomer hit Washington and hurt him. the coach told him to hurt him because he was black and he was good at the sport. Chris Crutcher made something bad to something worse and it kept escalating. First Louie storms off the field, then he quit football, then he got a girlfriend, then she died, then he threw a fit at her funeral, and now he broke her memorial in front of the school. During the part where Becky got in a car accident I didn't want to put the book down. everything was going so well between Louie and his girlfriend Becky. Then out of nowhere she dies. I will always remember the scene where Becky is killed. this is a huge point in the book, and the rest of the book is starting to reflect that whole point.
ReplyDeleteIn my book after a certain point it became more intense like yours and it kept me more intersented in it than at the beginning becuase the book was sloe at first.
DeleteIt seems like a coincidence with all his books, at least someone one dies or tries to. I think all his books relate to each other in one way or another but the thing is you never know what people are really going through
DeleteYour book sounds intense. it sounds like the main character is struggling throughout the whole book, it seems like one of those moments where its going to get better but it never does.
DeleteThis reminds me of Chinese Handcuffs because there is many parts that you think are bad, and only continue to get worse. this keeps it interesting because you never know what could happen.
DeleteThat was certainly a good part of the book but I don't really believe that it was his skin color that set Lednecky off. Sure it set Boomer off because he's extremely racist, but for Lednecky it was simply because of how much better of a player Washington was. I could be remembering wrong but I highly doubt that it was because he was black as one of the reasons.
DeleteThese were the main parts that were interesting to me, really anytime Louie is upset its a good part because of the emotion in the book
Deletethe point in the plot where I got hooked was the start of chapter 12. Crutcher starts the chapter off with Becky's sudden and sad death. I was not expecting that to happen halfway through the book. there was no foreshadowing or hints that Becky was going to get into a car accident, so it took me by surprise. After that chapter, everything became so much more intense, and through the tragedy that was Becky's death Crutcher was able to show more emotions from some of the characters we know less about. I will always remember the scene that was described when Louie arrived too the bridge hopeful she was okay just for that hope to turn into despair and shock that she's gone and never coming back.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds like it has the same storyline almost as the book i am reading called chinse handcuffs. They sound alike because a charactor in my book died also, which changed the emotions of others also.
DeleteI am reading Chinese handcuffs and I became hooked when Preston's brother Dillon told us about how they tortured and killed the neighbors cat Charlie all because it scratched there dog. Just about everytime I read I dont want to put it down it seems like every chapter is just as exciting as the last if not more exciting. I think i will always remember the way Dillon still held his head high after his mom and sister took off with no notice and his brother killed himself and Dillon and his dad were pretty much there to pick up the pieces.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds like it is tough to read. Very sad and brutal. Nobody should ever have to go through any of that. the good thing though is that Dillion didn't kill himself as well.
DeleteI agree that every chapter is always exciting if even more exciting than the last.
DeleteThe more I hear about this book the more ridiculous it sounds. Torturing and killing a cat simply because it scratched their dog? That's on a whole other level of animal cruelty that just makes no sense to me. I don't even understand how you could kill a pet animal like that, let alone for such a stupid reason as that.
DeleteI became hooked to my book for a lot of reasons. One reason is the amount of detail that Chris Crutcher put into his books. When he was explaining Preston's suicide, he went into so much detail that it made you feel like you were right there in that moment. The same thing with Jen and how she is being sexually abused, he made me understand what she is feeling and how disgusting something like that actually is to go through. One moment where I didn't want to put the book down was when Jens Grandpa was passing away. It was so strange how she knew he was dead and didn't do anything about it but also so sad because that was the only person she really felt safe around so she didn't want him being dead to actually be real. Something I will always remember about this book is how easy I have it. I do not realize how much harder others have when they go home from school every day compared to my life at home.
ReplyDeleteIt made me also feel like I was there. I like that he doesn't tell us everything right away and gives us information periodically because the story is never boring. I'm also very grateful for the life that I have and I think the characters need more empathy considering everything they have gone through. I think that once Jen watched her grandpa die was when she stopped feeling lots of emotion.
DeleteI would say the intense topic in Chinese Handcuffs is when Preston shoots himself. I became hooked was when Preston shot himself because I wanted to see how it will affect Dillon and everyone around him. I will always remember from Chinese Handcuffs is when Preston shot himself and everything that he did in the bar and I will also remember after Preston's funeral Dillon took Preston's ashes and dumped a little bit of them in the bike and the rest inside the bar and told the bikers how they did it and that if anything bad happens in the bar just know that Preston had something to do with it.
ReplyDeleteEverything Preston did in the bar also had a huge impact on me.
DeleteI had a similar event as my hook point. Where your point was suicide, my point was an accident.
DeleteThe bar seen was very interesting and hard to stop reading. I feel like we didn't see this side of Dillion as much so this really showed me how crazy he is.
DeleteIn the book staying fat for Sarah Byrnes i got hooked when we started learning about how Sarah was burned. the reasons it hooked me is because it went into great detail on the whole fight between Sarah's mother and Dale. They were yelling and getting physical with each other, it even got to the point that Dale tried to drown Sarah's mom in the sink. At that point i could not put the book down to save my life, because it was so intense and crazy to me that it could happen to anyone. i will always remember what Dale said to Sarah in the hospital "if you ever tell anyone what happened to you i will burn you the rest of the way" when Dale said that it sent chills down my spine.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting im reading Chinese Handcuffs and i feel like this is similar to Dillon and Preston in the bar and after shot himself
DeleteThe book I am reading is the book Chinese Handcuffs. This book was kind of boring at first but the more I read the more I got interested. The part of the story that made me keep want to read was finding out about Jennifer and her stepdad. This part of the book was very interesting, and it made me want to keep reading. Another part of the book that got me hooked was when Dillion picked up Preston's ashes and what he did with them. He took Preston's ashes down to the Dragon Tavern where Preston used to hang out with the bikers and do drugs. Dillion put his brother's ashes in the motorcycles gas tanks that were sitting out side so they would not run properly. He also walks in the tavern with the handgun that Preston shot himself with and was telling people not to mess with him. This is the part where i could not put down the book. A thing that i think i will remember about this book is Dillion finding out that Ryan is his nephew and him being shocked that he was right about it.
ReplyDeleteI think Chris Crutcher likes to add single parents into his books because most of the parents in staying fat are divorced and you talk about jennifers step father.
DeleteDillon putting prestons ashes in the motorcycles gas tanks and spreading them in the bar shocked me as well
Deletei agree with you that the insident between jennifer and her stepdad was a shock. i was not expecting that while i was reading the book.
DeleteI'm glad you are begin to like the book. sounds like a quality book that I might be interested in soon.
DeleteI have the book staying fat for Sarah Brynes and there are a couple parts that got me very engaged and sitting on the edge of my seat. There are many major points in the book that got me interested like Sarah talking for the first time, Eric kicking butt in swimming practice, Jody asking Eric on a date, or Mautz interrogating Eric about crispy pork rynes. but the part that stood out to me the most that really hooked me in was when Jody stood up for herself and told the CATS class about how Britain made her get an abortion. This action put a lot of things into motion. it showed Sarah that she has more allies than just Eric, it Really put Mark into place by showing the class how much of a hypocrite he was, and it fired up Mautz enough to suspend CATS class. Chris Crutcher put a lot of moving parts into this book that i really like. he made all the characters have very deep and intertwined backgrounds. This makes all the characters very flushed out and easy to relate to. almost like this is a true story about real people.
ReplyDeleteI agree about what you said about Chris Crutcher. He is a very good author and has a good way to hook the reader and grab there attention. I would consider myself reading more of his books because i enjoy the way he writes them.
DeleteJody getting support and realizing she's not alone is a very similar theme that Chris Crutcher also brought into Chinese Handcuffs. In my book our secondary protagonist Jen has been getting raped by her step father and she can't do anything about it because of his power and influence. She holds all of this inside and becomes distant to people but, our protagonist Dillon tries to find what's up with her. She is hesitant to tell him at first but one day she opens up to him. Dillon feels empathy for her and wants to do something about it but as of right now he can't. Both Dillon and Jen have come from traumatic backgrounds but, hopefully through communication they can heal and find a way to move on together.
DeleteAll of Chris Crutchers books all seem to kind of be the same but different in a way. You said Eric does swim just like in my book Dillion runs triathlons. your book also sounds like it is also very interesting.
DeleteThe book that I chose was Chinese Handcuffs. I was somewhat intrigued once Preston and Dillon killed the cat. This really caught me off guard and made me realize this wasn't going to be a regular read. Though what really hooked me was when Dillon and Preston expressed regret about it. This was the moment that these characters became compelling. They did something absolutely horrible but I didn't feel contempt towards them, I felt bad with them. Adding moral ambiguity to these characters made me more intrigued to continue reading from that point onward because of this moment early on.
ReplyDeleteI am nearly done with the book but not quite so I don't know if the ending will end up being the most memorable moment but for the time being I think that I will always remember Jen opening up to Dillon. I think this might be one of if not the most important take away from this novel because it shows that with hardship it is important to have open and honest conversation with others. When reading a book I like to take away something constructive that I can apply to my own life and with this book's themes I think this would be the most helpful to hold on to.
Im also reading Chinese handcuffs and i feel like you make a very good point with Dillon and Preston killing the cat. And i feel like Jen opening up to Dillon was a big part of the book
DeleteJen opening up to dillion may further their relationship as they become more comfortable with eachother and sharing their "events"
DeleteThe book I am reading is Chinese handcuffs. At first the book started off slow for me and I didn't really become hooked in the book until Preston and Dillion abused a cat until it could no longer live. I was really interested and kept reading in shock. I thought who in the right mind would do that. But the plot of the book really turned. It was when Preston told Dillion that he wanted to go shooting tin cans. Their, the book was very interesting and i couldn't stop reading it. The book kept getting more and more entertaining. Preston talked about some of his past and how his life isn't getting any better. I think the gang he was apart of really screwed his life up. He was on such high doses of drugs until finally he got the guts to shoot himself. Not only did he shoot himself, but he did it in front of his brother. I think it hit Dillion really hard to watch that happen. Another moment i could not put the book down was when Jen ran out of the gym and kept running and running till she reached the top of a bridge where their, she was going to jump off and also end her life. Dillion barely stopped her and i think Dillion reacted this way because he already witnessed his brothers death right in front of him and i do not think he could've watched another person that he is close with die also. He stopped her by yelling that if she goes he goes. Something I will always remember from this book is that some people who you never figure have big things going on in their life that most people would never believe or understand .
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the cat and dog incident. That was brutal and made me want to read more too.
DeleteI agree with you about the cat incident that was a great shock to me as well. and the part that Preston shot himself in front of his brother was very surprising also.
DeleteI'm reading the book running loose and the part where i became hooked in the story was when Becky was zooming down the highways weaving through motorcycles. Then the next thing you know she slams into a bridge ejecting her into the river below. Chris Crutcher gets me hooked because he gets the action going throughout the chapters of the book making me die to read more. Something that i will always remember about the book is that head coach of the football team Mr. Lednecky. The first part of the book i remember him as a unlikeable Peerson in my eyes because he treats the team like he's their dad and that pisses me off. Also are the certain drills and the curfews that are forced to be listened to by him me personally dislike the guy.
ReplyDeleteI also have the book Running Loose and my hook is the same part. The part that I will remember most is not the same, I chose when Louie smashed the plaque for Becky.
DeleteI bet the part when reading about becky hiting someone and flying of and landing in the river was a thrilling seen, i wouldve loved to read about that. Very intresting! I would agree that action that goes on within a book makes me want to keep reading and try new books in the furture. I feel like a coach is supposed to treat their players like their won kids in he watns to earn their trust. To win games the coach has to win over his players first, but thats just how i look at it.
DeleteI am reading chinese handcuffs and chris is doing a good job of having something new come up. He had me hooked when Dillon started to get involved with the biker gang. This hooked me because i wanted to know more about what the biker gang was going to do to him next. Then in the next chapter we found out that preston actually had a child(Ryan) with stacy and that Dillon was an uncle.
ReplyDeleteIt gave me a surprise when i read that section. It made me smile and also ponder how dillion is going to react
DeleteIm glad that chris is exceling at new obstacles being thrown at him and i hope he contiues. Im excited to see where Dillon goes with the biker gang and how it plays out. TThis relates to my book with the group of freinds joining the swim team and exceling. Now its pretty intresting that Dillon is an uncle now. I hope this book gets more exciting.
DeleteThe book I am currently reading is Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. The point in the book that made me become hooked was, the part when details about Sarah's life started to become released and she finally started to secretly open up to Eric about what she has all went through that she has never told him about. The way Chris Crutcher hooked me was by having Sarah slowly reveal the truth and it kept making me want to read and want to know more about her life and the truth behind every lie that she told to everyone. There was one moment in the book that I didn't want to put the book down, and it was when Sarah and Ms. Lemry take a trip to Reno to try and find Sarah's mom and Mr. Byrnes's was still back at home trying to find Eric so he can find out where his daughter went to. This part made me not want to put the book down because I kept wanting to know what Mr. Byrnes's plan was and what he was going to do to Eric if he found him. Also it kept me wondering if once or if Eric tells Mr. Byrnes, is he going to find Sarah and seriously injure her or even possible kill her. One thing I will always remember from this book is when Sarah spoke out and told the compete truth out her scars and how abusive her home was.
ReplyDeleteI was also intrigued when Sarah's past started to unravel in the book and everything became much more clear. When Sarah finally spoke out about the true cause of her scars and her past it was definitely a memorable moment that I will also not forget. I'm sure that was not at all easy for Sarah to say which made it all the more impactful.
DeleteI was also very intrigued when the possibility of Sarah's dad abusing her by causing those burns on her faces was an option. I immediately started to feel so bad that Sarah's dad may have had something to do with burning his own daughter's face. I was also scared for Eric and Sarah when Mr. Byrnes got the location out of Eric for where Sarah was. I just wanted to keep reading and find out if he was going to find Sarah. I truly hope that Sarah gets away fast enough so her dad cannot find her and hurt her. Sarah is very brave for telling the truth.
DeleteI felt the same way when Sarah finally found the guts to slowly tell Eric what had really been happening in her at home life. I expected it but at the same time I did not. Oh my gosh, I was thinking that when I got to the part when Lemery and Sarah went to go find her mom, it was so interesting, and I didn't expect her mom to act like that or not want Sarah to find her.
DeleteI am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. The point in the book where I became hooked was when the true story or history of Sarah's scars was revealed. After that, the whole story began to make much more sense and it makes me want to keep reading to figure out the rest of it and how the story will lay out. The way Chris Crutcher writes graphically about what is happening in the book is almost addicting and makes you want more. When reading about Virgil Byrnes and Eric's altercation I did not want to put the book down. There was a lot of intense things happening that pulled me in. I will always remember how Eric was running for his life without a clue where to go and a knife sticking out of the back of his shoulder.
ReplyDeleteI agree because I also became very hooked into the book when there was more and more info being released about Sarah and her father. I just kept wanting to read more and learn more about how terrible of a person her dad is. Not just that, but I also could not stop reading during the altercation either because I just wanted to keep knowing what was going to happen next and what was going to happen to Virgil Byrnes and if he was going to get arrested or not.

ReplyDelete(SPOILER) I got hooked into Running Loose as soon as the foul play happened in the game. I needed to know what was affected by that moment, and it happened before the half-way point in the book, so I was surprised that more could happen. Every twist in the book kept me hooked till the end, like Becky dying and Louie lashing out and ultimately being the outcast of the town. One part from this book that I will remember is Louie smashing the plaque for Becky, because of how Jasper disrespected her.
ReplyDeleteOne of the moments I became hooked into STOTAN! was when I was reading about the training sections. These really connected with me because all the boys wanted to recreate that feeling of togetherness, but were never able to and I feel that that feeling of unity is sprouted due to a common want to achieve a goal and practiced motions. Another connecting point in the book I liked is when the whole team(including max) beat down on O'Brian in a later section of the book, though the reason for this resignation with me well, I don't know. I think that I just felt strongly about how much of a bad person O'Brian was.
ReplyDeleteI really like how this small group can have such a big bond. Always being there for each other through the good and the bad. I also think the O'Brian is a disrespectful person that needs to be put in his place.
DeleteA few things got me hooked into my book STOTAN! The first thing that got me hooked would probably the stotan week. This week got me hooked because they always lead up to there season with it. With that complete they always excel early and often in there highschool swim season. They go through lots of challenges and obsticales like torture lane. After all the freinds completed it they celebrated and were relieved that it was all done. The second part that got me hooked was one of the charectors in the book, Nortie. Nortie is a confusing, but intresting charector. His worked at a care facility and one day he randomly quit. His freinds or nobpby knew where he was. He left a note to Walker sayin he wouldnt do what his brother did. His brother had hung himself in the garage after the beating he took from his dad for so many years. The one part i will always remember would be, the whole stotan week experince. They only ate egg sandwhichs with peanut butter, as they just tried to refuel there naging bodys. When they were all set and done the boys were happy and ready to compete at state, and trying to build themselves a legacy. A thing i will always remember about the book is home much i related to the book and how pulled in i was. Though i dont swim at all, it was interesting learning about it and they jourey these group of freinds were on.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with these areas that were hooks in the story. There is really a lot going on that I never would've expected to happen. I didn't know how I was going feel when I first started reading this either, but there is something about the book that makes want to keep reading.
DeleteSounds like a good book Might have top give it a try sounds very interesting.
DeleteI'd say the more important topics are the traumas and past experiences of all the characters in chinese handcuffs. I think when we got to Jen and her family was when i became hooked her grandfather dying then the *other* events that happened after meeting T.B. It detailed things other authors wouldn't likely do. I normally can't put a book down when i get into it and this is definitely had my attention when i read it All people dont have it easy and all lovey dovey that the world can be CRUEL.
ReplyDeleteI got hooked around the same time in the book, In my opinion it wasn't very interesting up until that point in the book.
DeleteChinese Handcuffs. I got hooked on the book after reading the letter that Dillion wrote to Preston expressing his feelings after his suicide. In the beginning, Preston's suicide details were very vague. Also in the letter Dillion admits to wanting his girlfriend and the rage he feels toward Preston. The way he talks in these letters is a little unsettling and sick which makes me curious and want to keep reading. A part that made me want to keep reading was when Dillion explained the nature of Preston's suicide and admits he was there when it happened and heard his reasoning for doing it. I'll never forget reading about the different traumatic stories with each character like Jen being raped by her father figure twice. This book probably has the most realistic trauma I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThis book has a lot of dark elements. It does seem very interesting though. In my book, Mark tried to kill himself and it was probably what made this book relatable to teens nowadays just like in your book.
DeleteI agree with everything you said, the more Dillon explains what happened the harder it is to put the book down.
DeleteI am currently reading Stotan. The point that got me hooked was when they had started talking about Nortie and what is life is like. He is an insecure person that wants to please everyone and is afraid to fail. Nortie is this way because of the way his father beats him and his mother. I became interested because I want to know how he will overcome that if he ever does. Another part is that Nortie's brother had killed himself. I don't what that exactly feels like but I know roughly because I have had 4 cousins who had committed suicide. Something that I'm always going to remember is how Walker was always there for Nortie. Having a close friend to lean on is something that everyone should look for.
ReplyDeletethe book Stotan sounds interesting that is cool it talks about Norites life and how it is and how he is afraid to fail. also the way he and his mom where treated and what happened to his.
DeleteWow seems really good maybe i will have to read it.
DeleteIn "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes", the biggest part that stuck out to me was Mark Brittain attempting to kill himself. I enjoyed reading this book from the start because it started off with deep and intense issues but it started to escalate. At the part of the book I am right now, has me hooked because the vice principal is trying to blame Mark's attempted suicide on other students. There are a lot of other things going on in the book now that has kept my attentions like Sarah's dad, Mr.Byrnes trying so hard to get Sarah back but she is safe and ran away. He threatens Eric to tell him where Sarah is. And Mautz gets involved and is against Eric stating how they've been friends for so long and it seems odd he doesn't know where Sarah is. Mautz knows Eric's lying to keep Sarah away from her dad. It appears Mautz sides with the wrong sides in the story and I'm intrigued so far.
ReplyDeleteI cannot stop thinking about Sarah's dad and what he has done to her I hope Sarah finds her peace eventually because she deserves it, she would be better off without him.
DeleteI agree, while Mark's attempted suicide was a dark event, Mautz trying to pin the blame on the other students is horrible of him to use someone's attempted suicide to garner sympathy. Really shows how Mautz abuses his power to manipulate others for his own personal gain.
DeleteI could not believe that Mr. Mautz tried blaming Eric for Mark's attempt. I think that Mr. Mautz needs to stop favoriting Mark just because they go to the same church. I agree that is very unprofessional of Mautz to always take the bad side in every single problem the school has. I think Sarah's dad needs to leave Eric alone and stay away from his daughter because he does not deserve to ever be around her again. I hope Sarah can stay away from him for good.
DeleteI agree that the more I continued to read this book it gradually kept getting more and more intense. I also can't believe how horrible of a person Mr. Mautz is to Eric especially when it come to Mark and Virgil Byrnes. I can not believe how much Mr. Mautz protects Mark and tries to blame every situation that Mark is involved in on someone else just because they go to the same church. Then when Virgil was looking for Sarah I do not understand how Mr. Mautz did not know how bad of a person Virgil is. Like he seriously let a very dangerous man into a school which is supposed to be a protected place for children to be.
Deletei am reading just mercy by Bryn Stevenson i got hooked in the book at the part where he was talking a bout kids just a little younger then us and how then got tried and what all happend to them in prison and how they got dragged in to the crimes that they were charged with the crimes and all there background. he got really detailed and got every part that was important detail. when Bryn was talking about the real life stuff that has happend to all these people that where tried as adults and that where falsely accused. the justice system isn't always right
ReplyDeleteThats when i got interested in that book too it was a really cool part and hard to put thee book down

ReplyDeleteSarah story about her father seem pretty interesting
DeleteI am reading staying fat for Sarah Brynes; I became hooked to this book specifically after Sarah explained the story about her burns and how she actually got them, turns out her father was the one that burned her when I heard this, I was so shocked and disgusted by his actions I could not even imagine having to live with that every single day. Chris Cruther hooked me by adding all of this detail and he really keeps you wondering what will happen next on the next page, I could not stop reading when eric came to visit Sarah in the hospital. I will always remember how one thing can really change a life, and how Sarah's life was in jeopardy every single day.
DeleteThe novel that I am reading as of recent is Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, the point where I became hooked was when the book started to go more in depth of Sarah's character, her past, her homelife, etc. The author, Chris Crutcher, was able to peak my interest in the book by gradually revealing more and more about Sarah's mysterious past throughout the book, rather than spilling the beans about her life right off the bat, making Sarah a more interesting character. For example, the twist that her father actually burned her and it wasn't a freak accident really changed my perspective on Sarah as a whole. At first being a decent side character and drive for Eric's motivations, to being a more deep and complex character than I could've imagined. The fact that she is willing to lie to protect people like Eric and Dale really shows that she's still able to care for others even with the pain she's been through. A moment where it was difficult for me to put the book down was when Sarah's father starting to look for her. When we're first introduced to her father, not much is known about him, the only information we get about him is that he's a typical drunk and abusive father/husband to Sarah and her mother. However, when Sarah and Lemry leave for Reno, Sarah's father turns from a minor threat to the characters to one of the most threatening villains I have read about. His actions such as cutting Eric's face with a knife when he won't tell him Sarah's location and his words such as threatening Sarah, Eric, and anyone else that gets in his way. The whole chapter where he's chasing after Eric left me on the edge of my seat and I was almost physically unable to put the book down due to the wonderful suspense conveyed through Chris' writing and the uncertainty of what Mr. Byrnes would do to Eric and Sarah if he caught them. Another thing that kept me engaged was wondering what will happen if Eric will be able to survive his encounter with Mr. Byrnes and be able to help Sarah. One thing that I will always remember about this novel is when Sarah revealed to Eric that she was faking being comatose so she wouldn't be brought back to her abusive father.
ReplyDeleteMoral of the story Sarah's dad is a terrible person and I have always known there was something off about him.
DeleteI am reading running loose and the part that got me hooked was when Louie was striving to beat everyone else. Chris got me hooked by explaining his determination that he has to beat everyone else and then another part that got me hooked was when Louie and Becky started going out ish. i wanted to see where it would go with them.
ReplyDeleteBecky and Louie's little date at the cabin got me interested a little bit too, i thought they were gonna get caught by Becky's parents the whole time.
DeletePersonally, this book didn't really hook me at any moment. While sure I can relate to it a bit and there are decent parts of the book, the genre and way of writing does not catch my interest in the way other books do. A thing that I will remember though is how abrupt Becky's death was. All of a sudden after talking about her it just went to "but now she's dead, so." While I get that sure it's kind of a journal type book, it really was too sudden and there was no buildup at all. It was an "oh okay, that just happened" type of moment and it really didn't seem like it fit in the book at all.
ReplyDeleteThe book I'm reading Running Loose was very slow and boring when i started, The pace moved fast but the book still didn't feel like it was really going anywhere. But when out of the blue it says that Becky is no longer alive was a spot i could not stop reading, It just didn't make sense to me idk how someone that important to the book could just die i had to keep reading to understand what was going on.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Chinese Handcuffs and one of the parts that made me become hooked is the first letter Dillion wrote to Preston, Dillion lets a lot of his feelings, and this allows the reader to truly understand what he is feeling. it also helps the reader understand why he does some of the things he does. I will always remember that part where jen come out about her sexual abuse because I think it is an important part of the book. Its real answers a lot of Dillions questions and provides context for her acctions.
ReplyDeleteThe moment I got hooked in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes was when Sarah all of a sudden went quiet and stopped talking to everyone. I wanted to know what happened to her that caused her to go from someone who always voiced her opinion to basically becoming mute. I have had multiple moments that I did not want to put the book down. For example, when Dale told Eric that Sarah told him that her dad caused the burns on her face and it was not an accident, that really intrigued me. I also loved the part when Sarah finally started talking again to Eric I just wanted to keep reading to see if Sarah would admit what her dad did to her. One of the most biggest cliffhangers I have read in this book was when Sarah's dad was threatening to kill Eric, I was curious if he actually was or if he wasn't. I could not believe that Eric actually told Sarah's dad where she was. One thing I will always remember about this book is how cruel Sarah's dad is, he deserves to go to jail and never escape.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. When Sarah went quiet it was like wow what really happened to her that she went completely mute to everyone. Along with how you felt when Dale told Eric what really happened with Sarah! Definitely thinking the same about the book!
DeleteThese same thoughts were running through my head thinking how her dad was controlling her making her stay so quite so he could just do what he wanted and burn her and a very big cliffhanger for me as well was eric being threatened to be killed this part just stuck to me and seem bigger.
Deletethis part also made me very interested because I wanna know how the heck she stayed quiet even when her dad was talking to her if I was her I couldn't of have kept my cool I probably would've screamed at him.
DeleteI am reading Chinese handcuffs and at first the book seemed boring but as I kept reading I got hooked. the part that really shocked me was they part with Jennifer and her stepdad. another part that shocked me was when Dillon spread Preston's ashes in the motorcycle gas tanks so that way they would not run properly.
ReplyDeleteI thought the part about her stepdad was the time I got hooked as well.
Deletethat book seems pretty interesting but it sounds like a good book
Deletei thought that part shocked me
DeleteI'm reading Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes I first became hooked in the book very resent when Sarah went to reno to try to find her mom. and Sarah's dad stabed Eric with a knife when he was getting into his car because he was looking for Sarah and Eric knew where she was. I think this is a very important part of the book because this really shows how crazy Sarah's dad really is. This is also a really interesting part of the book because of what Sarah finds out next.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that Sarah's dad is that crazy to find her even though he doesn't even care about her the fact that he stabbed eric doesn't even surprise me after all the other things he's done to her that he would do this.
DeleteI really became hooked to this book when we started to learn more about Jen and what she is dealing with. The book caught my attention on how both Dillon and Jen are both teens trying it have a normal life but nether can. One time I didn't want to put the book down was when Dillon was being chased around town by the warlocks.... it ended very differently than I had expected. I will always remember the part where Jen tells Dillon about the abuse and how it answered all the questions he ever had or wondered about her and why she is the way she is.
ReplyDeleteseems like a good book. in my book running loose theres 2 teens as well that are just trying to live a normal life but things go bad fast
DeleteI agree with the Warlock situation i definitely though Dillon would get hurt but they just wanted to talk.
DeleteThe moment I got hooked in Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes was when we found out what really happened to Sarah when she was burned. Turns out that her father pushed her into a wood burner which resulted in her scarred face and wouldn't let her get it fixed. One thing I wish I could have known was why Virgil Byrnes did not want Sarah to get her face fixed and what led up to him pushed her into the burner. There were many cliff hangers that I wish I could have known, however that's not how books are. The first part of the book was very boring and was not interesting me at all, but when Sarah ended up in the hospital because she wasn't speaking is when I knew this book was really going to be interesting. I will remember this book by how terribly Sarah was treated in her young years along with how Virgil treated her and her mother, and you can't forget when Virgil threatened to take Erics life because he wouldn't tell him where Sarah was.
ReplyDeletei got hooked on my book running loose early on in the book when Louie started to argue with the football coach and quit the football team. i was curious what would happen after he quit. after Louie quit the football team Becky offered to Louie that she quits cheerleading for him but Louie said no. it was terribile when becky died but once i herd that i was even more hooked in the book.
ReplyDeletethat sounds like a good book
Deletechinese handcuffs. i got hooked in this book originally when they were in the hospital for jennifers concussion because of how intense it was and then when she begged her coach to take her sister home and not take her to her house and was all freaked out, the way it caught my eye because it made me wanna know more about why she refused to have her sister be home alone but once i read more it talked about her stepdad sexuallty assulting her and howher actual dad did it too and it only made me that thas why she did not want her to go home alone. i also got hooked when they started talking about dylans death and the stuff leading up to it.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Chinese Handcuffs; I became hooked on this book pretty much from the beginning when Dillon started writing to his brother about his suicide. It was intense and I felt like I just needed to know more about the how and why of his brother Preston's suicide. I was also curious about how Dillon and Jen would bond over their traumas when they are both such different scenarios. Throughout the book it has been hard to put it down and stop reading there is just so much that gets uncovered as we read the book.
ReplyDeleteStaying fat for Sarah Byrnes had me hooked trying to figure out if Sarah was telling the truth about how her face was burned. It surprised me when Sarah went so far as to fake a condition to get away from her dad but if I were in her shoes, I would do the same. Sarah was talking to Moby telling him everything but scared thinking she was going to get killed because her dead had threatened to kill her if she told anyone. the truth is Sarah was pushed into a wood burned face and no matter what he wasn't allowing her to fix it because it was punishment for her parents getting into an argument. Overall, this part had me hooked and not wanting to put down the book thinking what will happen next. I will never forget how eric was threatened by Virgil for not saying where Sarah was staying or even at.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes part and the part where I knew I was hooked and wanted to read more was when Sarah was telling eric what happened to her face and what her dad did to her mom. That part had me hooked because from the beginning when eric was explaining what happened i was so interested to see how that happened to her face because i knew it wasn't just from a pot of spaghetti.
ReplyDeleteChris Crutcher hooked me when Dillon said that his brother committed suicide and he was there to see it. another reason is that he rights to his brother like therapy so it tells what happens in the past. i did not want to put the book down when diolan and the prinsabol where fighting and the prensabol sead that he will wind up like his brother.
