  1. One thing that attracted me to the novel "I Am Malala" was that I have heard about her in middle school. The primary focus in this novel is how Malala and her father are fighting against the Taliban to let women have the right to education. Malala and her father are handling this situation by speaking against the Taliban and Malala's father created a school for girls. Malala's father does not care what others think about his school for girls and continues to keep growing it. This book definitely has a slow start because it just keeps talking about the same event for longer than it needs to be talked about. My first impressions of this book is that it is very bad and boring. I do not find this book interesting because it is all non-fiction. I prefer fiction books that have a plot going on in the book.

    1. This book sounds similar to my book because they both discuss women's rights to education and how important it is. Laila's father also tries to educate his daughter because he also thinks it's important that women have an education.

    2. I agree, while her story and her culture are interesting, I feel like she often gets carried away with whatever she is talking about and loses focus of the plot.

    3. My book is similar becuase it has to do with the start of the Talliban and one of my main character is also getting an education from her father.

    4. I do agree that often times she can loose track of the plot but the book somehow seems to still be interesting.

  2. I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and I'd say this book has kind of a slow start because it wasn't really intriguing at first and I wasn't hooked. It started to pick up though and took a sharp turn, making me more invested in the book. The primary focus right now is women's rights because in both perspectives so far, they're both young women talking about their lives in Afghanistan. My initial thoughts about this book are saddening. This book really makes me realize how people all around the world struggles with issues daily I could never understand and it's considered normal in these places so they just have to endure it. Overall, I am enjoying this book.

    1. My book (I am Malala) started off very slow as well and I think that as we read more, we will eventually be excited to read the endings of our books!

    2. I also had a hard time getting hooked on the book and struggled reading it. Once things started to pick up it became more interesting but some parts are still difficult. I was shocked to see how normalized this treatment is but yet so traumatic for the women. It makes me think too how different it is because for example, I wear shorts and t-shirts in the summer because its hot but they have to be fully covered year round, regardless the weather. I'm not enjoying this book as much as I thought I would but I still like it.

    3. it shocks me that things back then where she lived were so normal like the abuse and rape, there was no consequences. Now that would not fly.

    4. I am reading the same book and I agree that the book starts out very slow and I was starting to regret my choice but as the story has gone on it has gotten interesting and now I am hooked.

    5. I am reading I am Malala and it also had a very slow and boring start. I am not very intrigued or hooked in my book either. In my book the plot still has not picked up yet and I am still very bored reading it. In my book the primary focus also is women's rights and Malala tells her point of view all throughout the story. My book also makes me very grateful for the life I have today.

  3. What attracted me most to this novel was the statement of "child soldier." That in general just interests me more than the others, besides night at least. A child soldier more than not, involves some sort of coercion of that child into being said soldier, whether that is through horrors they can't really comprehend properly, or threatening them and their family into complying. In the beginning the primary focus of the book, is how the rebel forces are going into each village and pillaging as much as they can, burning, raping, killing, etc. Ishmael, the main character of the book, is portrayed as constantly running away from these rebels as they keep going to the villages that he travels to. While he does find some peace for a day or two, it never lasts and he's always hungry. My main thoughts are honestly, it's a pretty good book, a slow-ish start but that doesn't last long as it was just building the setting before SHTF.

    1. I can't imagine what these children go through. This book sounds really disheartening and upsetting but I'd also be intrigued to learn about child soldiers.

    2. Night was also one I was very attracted to. It seems so interesting but at the same time very dark and upsetting. He's young and it's sad to hear the things he went through. When I was 14-15 I never had to wonder if I was going to live until the next day so hearing that was how he lived is so shocking and makes me very grateful for what I have.

  4. The primary focus of The Kite Runner is the relationship of Amir and Hassan. At the start of the book, Amir talks about his childhood, which includes Hassan and Amir being "friends". Technically Amir and Hassan is master and servant, but they act like good friends. The book has a slow start since all Amir does is talks about his childhood for 70-ish pages, but I have gotten to the conflict so it may start getting interesting.

    1. I totally agree with you that it will start to get more interesting, but I also don't know how they can be "friends" with the way that Amir treats Hassan.

    2. This sounds a lot like Long Way Gone because the author also spends a lot of time talking about their childhood and can almost get boring at times.

    3. I feel my book is in contrast to your book where your book may have taken 70 pages for a background on the characters past mine takes 15 pages to give background which is quite fast.

    4. seems like alot of the books start slow yours definitely took alot more to give the background information but i still feel like mine was slow and boring

    5. This book seems highly boring. Compared to Long Way Gone, it takes only a couple of chapters to start getting into the nitty gritty consequences of war. I'm glad that I got my book, The Kite Runner seems awful to read in my opinion.

  5. The book i am reading is A Thousand Splendid Suns. One thing that attracted me to this novel is Mariam wanting to live more of a life than she is. She was stuck with her mom in basically a shack for 15 years of her life, she didnt know anyone besides a handful of poeple. After her mother dies she gets to experience what shes always wanted to, but its not what she imagined. the book is very slow paced at the beginning and i thought it was going to be hard to read, but after the first couple chapters it started to pick up and become interesting.

    1. This is also seen in Long Way Gone because the main character wants to get out of the village, and war allowed him to do that, but the world was not what he had hoped and it makes him grateful for the life he did have.

      Delete
    2. it sounds like she was living a pretty secluded life style and finally got to get out and see the real world.

      Delete
    3. Your perspective on this book is kind of how I seen the book, I did see it a little more annoying than my initial thought was. But I'm glad she got more experience like she was wanting.

      Delete
    4. Like how Cooper said, the only way that our character was able to visit all of these other villages was on the pretense of War. It's the same on the fact that the world isn't what they imagined, but I feel as if that is simply because they haven't gone to places that are better yet.

  6. The reason i picked "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah is because of the short excerpt on the back. It introduced me to Ishmael and how he was out into war at the age of twelve and he has to flee rebels and barley makes it by with getting something to eat everyday. This is why i chose this book because it had a good hook right away. The focus of this novel is to show how back in time people started doing difficult tasks like war etc. at a young age. Ishmael was thrust into battle very early with little to no experience, and Ishmael wanted his story to be heard of how he overcame his struggles and to regain humanity he once had. From the short start Ishmael and his friends look like theyve done this before. They seem to escape from the rebels each time and find some place to sleep while seeing all the terror. I feel like this book jumps right in and makes you feel like your in Ishmaels shoes. It gives little background at the start and it feels like they are just on the run at all times. I like when books drag you in right away because you never know what is going to happen next.

    1. I also feel like this book keeps pulling you in through it intensity and great detail. The fact that he was introduced to this and lived it at only 12 still blows my mind. The beginning I thought was a little slow but it gets interesting shortly into the book.

    2. I feel the excerpt on the back of night was very interesting as the back gave a very light summary of the book while omitting enough of the finer details to keep the story in the book.

  7. Something that had attracted me to The Kite Runner is about the kid becoming a soldier. So far in this book it has not happened but there are a few things I wasn't expecting to happen. Amir and his father Baba have servants, but compared to everyone else in Kabul, they aren't treated poorly like the others. I feel bad for the servant Hassan, who is the same age as Amir. Amir tells him he is a friend but will only play with him if there is nobody else around. Hassan had also gotten beat up in the alley by 3 kids as Amir just watched it happen. Hassan was later set up by Amir, because he had put his new watch and money under Hassan's bed, saying he had stolen it. Hassan and Ali, his father had decided to move on from being there servants and to go live with there cousins in Hazarajat. This book is different and was not really expecting it to start out this way, but I think the more I read, The more I will enjoy it.

  8. I was attracted to the book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" because I was curious to see the treatment of young women and the difference between the US and Afghanistan. In the book the main character Mariam is forced to marry a 40-year old man who rapes and abuses her. That's normalized and legal over there so she has no choice. She doesn't really handle it, she just puts up with it all and tries to make her husband happy whenever she can. The first few chapters were hard to get into because there was a lot of things that I didn't understand. It wasn't very interesting but then more things started to happen which made me want to keep reading.

  9. The book I am reading is, "I am Malala" what attracted me to this book, was the fact that she got to explain her story of when she got shot in the head and she was alive to tell her story, and I think that was a miracle, and I wanted to learn more about her story. The primary focus of this novel was Malala and the Talanian and how she moved away from her home, just basically her story. The main character Malala is handling it well and her and her brothers are going to school, adapting to their new reality, her mother on the other hand misses her hometown (swat) and I need to figure out more about her father. My initial thoughts of the first few chapters honestly, I thought it was pretty interesting! I did have a pretty slow start reading this but now that I am reading it more, I am adjusting to what is actually going on and I am trying to predict what will happen next every single chapter.

  10. What attracted me to the book Long Way Gone was the picture of the little boy on the cover carrying an RPG. I knew right away that this would be a deep, hard to read book. At first this book is slow and we learn a lot about the kids background and how they live. But quickly it gets interesting as rebels come in and ruin everything. We get to follow along as Ishmael and his friends try and survive and run from this war. But there are many challenges they have to overcome together.so far I am happy with my pick. 11. What initially attracted me to I Am Malala was that I first heard about her all the way back in middle school, at the time I didn't know her story and therefore didn't know why she was so important that there were posters of her around my middle school library. Now since I have started to read the book, I now understand why she was and still is important to the world. The primary focus of the novel is Malala recounting how she with the help of her father, stood up to The Taliban and their extreme beliefs by pursuing her path to education for herself and the other girls in her village, akin to a modern Martin Luther King Jr. She defies death after being shot in the head via medical intervention so she could continue her goal to strive for better education around the world. The book has a slow start as it often repeats information about certain events that the reader already knows as well as her recounting mundane moments in her life that add very little to the overall plot of the book, while it was interesting to learn about the different cultures of her homeland, it often drags the book into a long and unnecessary description of her culture and homelife that lasts longer than it should. My first impressions of this book were that while aspects were interesting, these interesting factors of her life and culture can overshadow the plot of the book, halting it from being a great read and turning it into a boring mess. While I do think this book has potential, I feel it lacks structure and often gets carried away with background information rather than focusing on the plot itself. I find this book's plot interesting, but the plot seems secondary to Malala's description of her life. While I do find fiction books more appealing, I do occasionally enjoy non fiction books as long as they remain interesting and have a structured plot, which this book sadly doesn't.

  12. The reason I picked Night is due to the fact that I like a good historic book especially those of the WWII variety. My book Night is a book about a boy named Elie Wiesel and his experience in various concentration camps. The book slams the reader right into the action by immediately dumping the reader into bits and pieces of Jewish faith experienced by the author across the years 1941 - 1944 then it moves to Jewish interaction with police and finally to the concentration camps. and though the book is fast it is very descriptive and interesting and i am exited to read more

  15. the book i have is kite runner. what attracted me to this book at first was the setting ive never read anything that takes place in afganastand so i thought this book wound be intresting, it would show the afagn culture. but what attracts me to the book now is the relationship between amir and hussan and how it has been flip on its head. this relation ship is the primary focus of the novel it has shown the dynamic between the two boys all of there lives. the big problem we have just arrived on was Hussan getting raped and amir did not handle this well. As Amir just stood by and watched wich is killing himself inside. because of this whole sistuation Amir has shut out Hussan most probaly because he is so appauled by his own actions he cant stand to look at hussan as thats all he sees when he looks at him. for me this book was kind of a slow start as i chose a differnt book as my number one pic so i had to warm up to the book but now i am quite intriged by what is going on in the book and i am ready to read more.

  16. I am reading I am Malala and I picked to read this book because I wanted to see how she overcame being shot. This book basically tells us her story to how she was in a bus getting shot to now where she is a motivational speaker who shares her life story how she overcame that and is able to live today. At the start of the book, it talks about how when she was born the doctors and everyone else besides her family didn't really care for her because she wasn't a boy and where they lived in swat that is all they cared about. the book doesn't really make any sense to me in the start because it goes from when she was born and her life up until she gets shot, I wish they would've started it out with that, and they went to when she was born. but overall i think so far the book is every good.

  17. The primary focus in the book night is to tell a true story about what the jewish dealt with or went through in the Nazi regime. They handle with the situation by believing everything is gonna be alright until they get smacked with the reality that things are in great danger. 18. The reason I was so attracted to the book "Night" was the fact that it was about the holocaust. I have always been so interested in the holocaust ever since US History. The main focus in my novel is the journey Elie Wiesel had going through all of the concentration camps and all of the gory things he had to see while being in them. A lot of the characters in this book (the jews) are very distraught by this because they are loosing family and other things that they cherish for doing nothing wrong. After reading the first few chapters in this book I am appaulled at some of the things people had to watch. They explained how they would throw all of the jewish babies into fires because they do not qualify as workers. It is disheartening to think about but I like how they get into what the book is about right away. Lets just say my first impression is disgusted.

I would say the main focas point is Amir and how he acts and changes because at first you think he's a kind boy but then he framed Hassan and and how he felt bad for Baba because the transition from Afghanistan to the US was difficult for him. 20. In my book A Thousand Splendid Suns it caught my eye when I heard and started reading about the changing of the female value. This book has twists and turns that you'd least expect to happen. What really caught my attention is when Jalil and his 3 wives made young Miriam marry an older man because you don't see that around the United States. I am thinking the main focus of my book is how the females are pushed into marriage and carry on the heritage like Miriam is trying to do but has not been successful. She ignores what she truly wants and tries to give Rasheed the children he deserves after his son passed. My thoughts are this book has been slow pased and drawn out a little here and there but speeds up after Miriam gets married. It has been very interesting and has made me quite mad at some points but overall has been a good read so far.

  21. I am reading the book A Thousand Spllendid Suns and the thing that attracted me to this book was the different culture and how war brought two people together. The main focus of this book is the start of the Taliban and the culture of afghanistan through the eyes of main characters Mariam and Laila. So far Mariam has been very quite and resvered about the situatuion because in her culture she can't voice her opinion or talk back to her husband. Laila so far is only nine years old and doesn't really understand the whole situation, but her dad is trying his best to get his daughter an education. At first the book moves very slowly and slowly picks up as the chapters go on. It started off sort of slow with a lot of background information. Shortly after that it gets into the action and it spares no details. The book is very detailed and interesting and gruesome at the same time. The main character recalls what he all seen and went through and it makes you wonder how he survived through all the situations that he did. Something that interested me after i started reading this book is about malala's background story. i couldnt believe she was found on her way to school and shot over just wanting to be at school. She is trying to make it so women have the right to go to school if they desire. some background on the story is that Malala and her father zauiddin want schools for everyone to attend. But they are being slowed down because the taliban is attacking their village and doesn't aprove of women entering schools. i think the book started off good with Malala's background but has become a slow read because of all the events of her life being drug on longer then they need to be. overall can be interesting at times.

I am reading the book Night and what caught my attention was a boy telling his version of the holocaust I think it is very interesting because every story you read is a very different from the last of what they experienced during this time. Although my first impression of the book was sad because they did absolutely nothing wrong Jews were just living their normal life in their towns and villages but Hitler thought they were evil for no good reason. My first impression was sad because the Germans took everything from them they tried to hang onto some of their valuables but most of all they just wanted their family alive and save and at any time a German soliger could kill them just because he is trigger happy.

  25. I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, and what caught my attention was how the book is based off of unfairness and inequality when it comes to girls from the Middle East. I think it is interesting because not a lot of female voices are heard from where Miriam comes from, so is a big eye-opener when stories like these can be shared. it's a good way to get publicity and knowledge around the world to help stop the treatment of women. The book is about sharing the women's view of how society is over in the Middle East and expressing that every part of the world has a different way of treating each gender based on their culture. My first impression of the book, I was worried I wouldn't find it interesting enough to stay focused. the first couple of chapters start out slow, introducing the new characters and setting of the book. but by page 30 things sped up real fast.

  26. The Book I chose to read was A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. I chose this book because I saw the front cover of the book and it looked like it was going to be a good book. The book is about how he was from Sierra Leone. It talks about how him and his childhood friends went to Mattru Jong on a regular day and it became not so regular. While they were gone to Mattru Jong the boys had to run from the rebels. the rebels were people who would raid villages and kill anyone who would try to stop them. Ishmeal and all of his friends are now living on their own and fighting for their lives. The boys would even steal food from peoples homes at night just so they could fulfill their hunger. This book does a good job of jumping right into action.

  27. I am reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel and what caught my eye about this book compared to the other ones is that the person who wrote this book had survived through the holocaust after being taken from his home in Sighet, Transylvania. The beginning of the book starts off by Wiesel telling us what his life was right before he was taken by the Germans.

  29. The book that I'm reading is night by Elie Wiesel I choose this book mainly because Liked the book prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz I like the fact that the authors actually witnessed first hand what happened in these camps I also enjoy the topic of the book. It talks about the death and hard conditions they went through. The amount of death and the ways they do it is sometimes unsettling. My first reaction was sad because these people are being ripped from there homes and sometimes there familes

  30. The book that I am reading is Night and the reason I chose this book as my number one choice is because I enjoyed learning about the holocaust and I mainly just enjoy history in general so this book caught my attention the most. The primary focus of the novel is obviously about the holocaust and about what life was like during all of it. It share his journey through all of the tough time and how poorly everyone was treated during that time. Elie who is the main character is trying to do everything that he can to survive and not be thrown into the fire and burn to death. To me the beginning of the book started off kind of slow but then it quickly picked up and started to go more into detail and talk about the begging of the holocaust. At first I was not really impressed with the book but as I continue to keep reading it I'm beginning to like it a lot more.

  31. I choose A Long Way Home because it sounded very interesting to read. After reading to chapter 5 it real has some attention towards the people of the village and violence towards them. The primary focus of the book is mostly the Taliban taking over the village and shooting a bunch of innocent kids and adults. The book starts to jump right into action and very bad things occur during the first couple chapters of the book. The characters are absolute terrified, and some are used to hearing gunshot and seeing dead bodies everywhere. Also, my first impressions are of the book are positive because they talk about lots of good things and get into details about the Taliban. I like the book so far.

  33. I am reading kite runner and i think what really attracted me was the adventure and suspense in the story. i would say that the primary focus would be about running from their problems. Amir has ran away from a lot and has seen a lot but never intervened with those problems. Now him and his father have ran away to america to escape the rest of their problems. i would definetly say that this book had a slow start but now it is finally picking up.

    1. I also choose my book to learn more about the historical context behind the story. Both of our books deal with the them of oppression and it will be interesting to see how these themes develop and how these novels connect as they progress.

  35. What drew me into this book is based on a real story about a girl that got shot in the head by a Taliban in Pakistan. The beginning of the book is slow and boring i thought. it was all talking about her back ground and culture. her background and culture is way different than ours around here. down in Pakistan whenever there is a girl born they don't care and hardly celebrate. they believe girls are good for cleaning and cooking and that's it. but when there is a boy born they are all happy and celebrate because men are superior in their eyes.

  36. The book I am reading is I am Malala. The biggest problems she has faced was mainly her father. He has had trouble reaching his dream for making a school for girls to be able to go to but it has been financially hard. Now it's worse because a group called the Taliban came and are saying girls are not allowed to go to school. They are blowing up schools and killing innocent people. Her and her father try to stay positive, but it is getting hard to do that. Especially when no one is able to stop them because who ever does gets killed. If I was the main character I would not be as calm as Malala and would not rebel against them for fear of being killed. It is very up and never a slow moment she gets every detail of how it happened her life before and even after what happened.

    1. The main character of The Kite Runner, Amir is an interesting contrast with Malala is believe. Amir is more cowardly while Malala is more brave. Their fathers are also a good contrast because Malala's father is trying to break the norm by getting his daughter into school while Amir's father is more status quo.

  37. My book is The Kite Runner and it has started on a good note. I was attracted to this book due to my lack of knowledge in Afghanistan and what goes on within that country especially during the 1970s-80s. I enjoyed the exploration of Amir and his father Baba's relationship. Baba is stern while Amir is kind of wimpy. The other relationship dynamic that I found interesting was between Amir and his childhood friend Hassan since they are both from different social classes but still get along because they're kids and don't hold prejudice against others.

  39. The book I'm reading is ''A Thousand Splendid Suns" I was attracted to the book because of the perspective it was going to be told in. The book gives a perspective of a young girl in Afghanistan and how she lives her life with her not so great mother and her very fake father. This book is off to a very slow start and I am hoping it picks up its pace otherwise its going to be a very boring book.

  40. Kite runners at its start is slow introducing khalled's family and their situation before they start to move out of Afghanistan. It is a real story novel that confused me at first but it's interesting hearing about the family and their neighbors and relatives. They've prepared for a bit to escape "poverty." Later we learn it was Russians who were invading their home. Overall, so far its a slow moving books before it picks up.

  41. after getting my nook a long way from home the challenge that my characters face is the rebel troops invading their home village and them being away from it for a competition. i think my nook is starting off pretty slow but that is because they are introducing the characters, and they also are setting the plot and the setting up for. a major key thing in my book is war and raids from rebels

  42. I am reading I am Malala the main charter is Malala and I first started liking the book when she start speaking out about woman's rights and what she believed in her dad is like her best friend in this book because the both speak out about woman's rights her father also built a school that woman are accepted in this is one of the only schools in pakasn. this book kind of has a slow start to my standers I would like if the book just got right into it all so I stay interested

  43. I am reading I am Malala the main character is Malala I started liking this book when she explained what happened on the bus when she got shot and where she went to the UK to get better schooling. I kind wished this book would've started with the shooting then broke down everything that happened before then at the end told use what her life s like now and what she went through after that.
