Conflict--Every book has some sort of conflict that pulls the reader in and keeps the reader reading.  Conflict can be person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. self, person vs. society, or person vs. the supernatural.  Identify the primary conflict in your novel.  Who or what is involved with the main conflict?  What is the conflict?  How does your character handle himself/herself when faced with this conflict?  How does this conflict add to the story line of your novel?  How is the conflict resolved and what is the outcome?

  1. The conflict in my book is Sloane and Lucian cannot stand each other because of things that happened while they were in high school. They live right next to each other but cant even look at each other without insulting one another. Sloane tries to ask Lucian why he cant get over the past and move on but he ignores her. Sloan gets frustrated that he wont move on and Lucian gets frustrated she keeps talking to him. This is happening right now in my book so I'm not sure how it all pans out.

    4. In the novel that I am reading "The Catcher in The Rye" there is also conflict in the story between two students in a school. Though my book differs in that this is not the main point of contention within it. The core of the story is about my character figuring life and people out which would make is character vs society.

  2. The conflict in my book is Van Helsing and his friends vs Dracula, Helsing being a force of good while Dracula is a force of evil. Van Helsing is an expert of the supernatural, especially vampires, being the only one to fully understand what is happening to a girl named Lucy after she is bitten by a bat. Placing garlic around her room, before her mother removes the garlic and opens the window for fresh air, unknowingly putting Lucy in grave danger. Afterwards, Helsing tries to convince his friends, Quincey Morris, Arthur Holmwood, Johnathan Harker, Mina Harker, and Jack Seward that the supernatural is real, it doesn't take until something tragic happens to Lucy and reports of strange things happening around the area that he convinces them of the existence of the paranormal. Helsing and his friends are now determined to take down Dracula to stop him from causing more destruction as he is currently in London because of some real estate that he had purchased, as of now they are unable to track him down. As this is currently happening in the novel, I don't know how this conflict will resolve.

  3. The main conflict in Night is a problem of either he lives or dies in the concentration camp and he doesn't know if its coming or not day by day. He was scared marching towards the crematorium when they first arrived at the camp, but he's "adjusted" and would maybe even welcome death at this moment. This is a smaller conflict in the book since it is about WWI and he's a Jew during WW2 and the Nazi's are committing genocide of his people. As for the resolution there isn't one in sight where I'm at in the book so far except that the American's did bomb part of where they are at but not enough according to Eliezer.

    1. In my book one of Bella's problems is if she is going to make it out of the woods alive or dead too. Bella's food and water access also determines day by day and what she can find throughout her journey. Bella was scared of coyotes and also got used to the woods after a while. My book does have a resolution and it is that Bella made it out of the woods alive.

  4. The main conflict in the book I'm reading the ghost deer is that the main character Tate made a bet with the neighbor boys That if he didn't get a buck they would get his dog but if he got a buck they would leave him alone for a year. he focuses on trying to hunt a big buck on his hunting trip and gets faced with losing the deer multiple times and coming across other hunters hunting the same deer. it adds to the story line by giving Tate a chase to get the deer and not just see it and kill it.

  5. The conflict in my novel is person vs. person because the dog is trying to escape from animal control. The owner of the dog is involved with this conflict because he ends up having to move to Colorado rather than living in Denver where Pitbull's are illegal. Also all the people who had to take care of the dog for Lucas were involved because they had to temporarily take care of Bella until Lucas found a new apartment outside of Denver. Bella is also involved because she has to travel throughout the woods to find Lucas because she ran away from her temporary owners. The conflict is that Bella lost her owner. Bella handles the situation by staying strong and convincing herself that she will eventually find Lucas. This conflict adds to the story line by creating a plot because without this conflict there would be no problems in the story. The conflict is resolved when Bella eventually finds Lucas and they end up living together again in a new place outside of Denver away from the animal control guy.

  6. The conflict in the book In the garden of beasts is everywhere from person to person to, person and society. This book focuses on the backstabbing of your supposed allies in the top of their respective governments to the lowest parts where you fear for your life because of strict reasons. The main conflict is the three main Nazi leaders, Hitler, Goring and Himmler. Their power grows ever stronger by the day because Gorings SA is powerful and loyal while himmler has control over the SS and the regular army. The main character dobbs handles this very unknown because when this happens he's back in his farm in the US on leave. This adds to the storyline because the 3 main powerful people struggle and are hungry for power just like history before them with the roman empire. I think this conflict eventually has the Empire divided into 3 districts because the Goring and himmler are becoming to powerful to be under hitler.

  8. In the book Night, I am reading about Elie the main character and he is faced with a lot of adversity. He is faced with person vs society. In the book it talks about how they all have to defend for themselves. The SS officers are against the jews. the jews are against the jews fighting to stay alive in the camp. This book faces a lot of conflict between characters too. It talks about how Eliezer's dad gets clubbed in the head by a SS solider. The book Night also mentions how Elie was whipped 25 times when he was sick because he was not working hard enough. There is also some person vs nature in the book too.

  9. There are 2 main conflicts in The House In The Pines is between my main character Maya and herslef with her mental health. The book is about Maya trying to slove the murder of her bestfriend from her childhood and there was another murder in the same town and possibly by the same guy. But the girl's death's were looked into and there is no reason why they dropped dead all of a sudden. But Maya is convinced that this Frank guy that she dated for a sort period of time has something to do with it. Even though the police said Frank did not do it she still doesn't believe it and there has been a history of mental health problems in Maya's family so she is not certain that she even believes herself. The other conflict is between Maya and Frank because Maya used to date Frank before she went off to college and he might have killed her bestfriend. Maya is convinced that Frank murder the two girls but she can't find any evidence that he did it. Maya is also convinced that Frank some how made her forget things from her past that could help her investigation but since she can't remember she can't put Frank behind bars. Also, because of the murder of the two girls Maya got into some heavy drinking a drugs so she is also battling addiction that people think are making her believe Frank killed those two girls just because he was with the two when they dropped dead.

Louie the main character has just found out the love of his life has died and he is feeling a lot of emotions right now. Before all this went down he had a conflict with the coach of his football team and the principle but the death of Becky is the most recent and traumatic conflict going on in his life. 11. In my book "If You Tell", the primary conflict in my book is person vs. self conflict. The mother, Shelly, is struggling with mental health problems and struggling on whether she should abuse her children, brother's kid, and her friend Kathy for an unknown reason or to treat them like how a child or a friend should be treated. Shelly either decides to have her mind tell her that they did something wrong and that they should be punished for it even through there was no evidence that they did anything wrong. Or Shelly decides to think things through and treat them respect and appreciate them for the things they have done for her while she just sits around doing absolutely nothing. When Shelly sends either the kids or Kathy out to do something for her she tend to go back in the house and then later on try to find something imaginary to abuse them for. When Shelly is facing her conflict, she decides on how she should react to the situation. Most of the time Shelly finds joy out of abusing them so when she decides whether she should abuse them or not. She typically chooses to abuse them instead of treating them like an actual human being and with kindness. This conflict adds to the story line because it shows how mentally ill Shelly is and how she deals with this conflict throughout the story. So far in my book this conflict has not been resolved and she still continues to choose between either abusing the youngest two daughters or treating them like she loves them.

  12. because there are two main characters in Pushing The Limits, there are many conflicts. each chapter switching from both echo and Noah's point of view. Echo's home life is not the greatest ever since her brother died and her mom tried to kill her she can't remember anything from that night. all her memories are repressed to keep her mind sane. all she wants is answers and the file about her troubles is right in front of her every time she goes to her scheduled therapy with the school counselor. Noah is a foster kid who's been passed around to one too many bad foster homes. his parents passed away in a fire that he feels he could have prevented if he had just been home the night his little brother accidentally lit the wrong candle. he needs his file to figure out who's fostering his two younger brothers so he can prove that they aren't adult parents and he can get custody of his brothers once he turns 18. Echo and Noah started out as friends during tutoring sessions but the more they got to know each other the more they liked each other. they came from opposite worlds from friends to economics class. but eventually, because of the home life situations they both face they became really close and caught feelings. echo seems more reserved and holds herself to a higher standard because of how she was raised and what her dad expects of her, Noah, on the other hand, has no one to look up to and nobody to be responsible for so he tends to lash out and be a lot more aggressive when things don't go his way. deep down he means well he is just an angry kid whos been through a lot.

  14. The conflict in my book that i read called The Boy At The Top Of The Mountain has lots of struggles in life. His name is peter and he moved in with his aunt Beatrix after both of his parents died. He was 7 years old at the time and moved into hitler's house where his aunt was a maid. A conflict that occurred was that peter became close with Hitler and always told on the other servants if they did something wrong, one day peter caught his aunt and the chauffer in a room making out, then he later caught the chauffer trying to poison hitler's cake and stopped him from eating it. When peter confessed to hitler about everything he saw, Peter ran into a conflict where on christmas eve he looked out his window and saw hitler killing both his aunt and the chauffer. Peter realised what kinds of problems he created and tried to solve them by keeping to himself and eventually hitler left because of being caught during the holacust.

By doing that he put Preston's ashes into the biker gangs gas tanks and now they are after him. so he's got to run and hide. He deals with this conflict by running and then getting caught and just talking to them. by talking to them it cleared everything up instead of running away from them forever. another conflict going on is with Jennifer. Her step dad has been raping her and she doesn't know what to do. He is a rich man and says if she tells anyone he will hurt her mom and sister and puppy. she ended up telling Dillon but he made a promise not to do anything or say anything to anyone. so we will wait and see if anything happens there.

  18. The main conflict in The Catcher in the Rye is person vs. society. The story's protagonist, Holden Caulfield, faces internal conflict in dealing with the "phoniness" and superficiality he sees in the adult world around him. He struggles to find authenticity and meaning in his life.
The conflict is established early when Holden is expelled from his school. He handles this like other conflicts in the book - by withdrawing further into his alienation. He sees himself as morally superior to the "phonies" that surround him, yet struggles to connect with others.
This central conflict adds tension and insight into Holden's perspective, as he wanders alone around New York City questioning superficial social customs, his crisis touches on universal feelings of isolation and a desire for meaning.
As of where I'm at in my book this conflict has not been resolved. I am not sure if it will even be resolved with how lost he is. I am not sure how an individual would escape these feelings.

  19. I am reading Night I feel like the main conflict is the holocaust and how Elie is fearing for his life everyday and experiencing bodies being burned and people getting shot. I feel like Elie deals with the conflict pretty well he's not freaking out but he's still worried for his life and his dad but i feel like the conflict effected his dad more because his dad is tired worn out and drained .I feel like during the holocaust everyone was fearing for there lives and had so much fear that nobody went out for the soup other than one guy who got shot and died. I feel like the outcome could end in two ways they escape and survive and Elie and his dad live in a house and try to go back to what life was like before the holocaust and heal up Elie leg or they both die to the snow and cold.
I think that this would be an example of person vs society because the Nazis are the main conflict and are persecuting Elie and the rest of the jews with the concentration camps.

  20. In my "Night" by Elie Wiesel, the main conflict is Elie and and his fathers battle to stay alive. Everyday they are given rations of soup and bread. Later in the book they go without any food for six days and people start acting like wild animals. They think about nothing other than food, and when a passerby tossed in a crumb of bread, multiple people were killed trying to fight over it. In the book the only battle they are fighting is mentally, making the conflict person vs. self. An example of this would be towards the end when the Russians came close and the Jews were evacuated from the camp. In one night they had ran 20 kilometers without stopping, and those who did were either shot or trampled. Running was not only a battle mentally, but physically.

The short excerpts of soilders were shocking to me and what they went through, firstly in the planes they are all being tossed around due to the pilots evading german gunfire and how everyone was throwing up and being knocked unconsious due to the collision on the plane walls. 23. Reading "Dante's Inferno," there isn't really a main conflict between Dante and something else. While sure he has been denied access to a city called "Dis," but it was solved quite quickly since an angelic messenger from Heaven just let him in. So far the specific conflicts are between people and environment for those who have been punished. From torture that has to deal with worms and bees, have their soul trapped in a raging storm, be forced to lie down and take a rain of filth and excrement, kill each other with giant rocks, kill each other in gruesome ways, lie beneath a river current and choke on mud, trapped in tombs and burned alive, spend an eternity in boiling blood, endure your soul being turned into a tree and becoming one, or walk an eternity in a desert with burning sand. There really isn't a main one unless you count "Man vs. Hell" and the punishments they must withstand. The conflict will never be solved, mankind will always commit sins as it is wired into our DNA.

  24. In my book "The Silent Patient", I'd say the main conflict is person vs. society because the main character Alicia won't speak and the other characters in her life mainly her therapist represent society as they are trying to get her to speak and figure out why she killed her husband. Alicia is in a psychiatric unit so she's portrayed as unresponsive and crazy because she doesn't speak verbally and rarely speaks nonverbally. She kind of handles herself as a shell of a person she's barely living just surviving. When people trigger her, she's responsive like she'd attacked multiple people so far in the story when they said something she didn't like. This conflict is the whole point of the story, hence the name "The Silent Patient" because she's gone silent, impacting the entire story. I haven't gotten to the part where the conflict is resolved but I predict the conflict will end once she finally speaks or they figure out what her motive was for killing her husband.

A royal visiting from Auranos kills a wine-seller's son in "self-defense" in Paelsia. Paelsia and Limeros see this as an act of amusement and end up declaring war on the Auranos. That in turn snowballs into everything this book has to offer. The 3 main characters view this differently. Jonas, who was the brother of the dead wine-seller's son, wants revenge and will stop at nothing. Cleiona, known as Cleo, is Auranos's royal princess, who was witness to the death of the wine-seller's son. Magnus is the heir to the Limeros throne, and must take part in the war that follows. The conflict is ongoing, but I am sure it will end because the three leaders have discussed about the war.

With this book being just a bunch of interviews with former athletes, I would say the conflict is just life. Some being worse than others but still being able to put themselves into the right situations to succeed.

  29. I am reading an Iowa pilot named hap. I would say the primary conflict is that hap was in a prison camp. Hap was taken to a German prison camp with one of his gunners. After hap and his rear gunner got shot down in there new b-24 bomber plane they plummeted to the sea where German soldiers "rescue" them and take them to a P.O.W. camp. (prisoner of war). Hap keeps a cool head in this camp with a strong trust in the US's armed forces. he knew they have the upper hand in the war so he just waited it out. this adds to the story by showing the hardships he had to go throw to become the man he was. This conflict is eventually resolved by the US winning the war witch freed all the Prisoners of war.

    1. The biggest conflict in my book was the main character Elie going to a contention camp. Similar to the POW camp in Germany.

  30. I am reading Wake by Lisa McMann. This book has many conflicts, but I would say the biggest would be when Janie gets sucked into other people's dreams and fights herself to get out of them. This brings unhealthy habits to Janie's attention such as shutting people out when they start to realize what's going on with Janie and why she has these episodes. Brings drama and conflict to the table for Janie and her friends.

  31. I am reading the book Night. The main charter Elie is faced with a lot of conflicts during this novel. Elie is faced with person vs society. Elie is a Jew at a camp fighting to stay alive and be heath enough to stay alive to keep working in the camp. Elie has recently been sick with a bad foot making him not be able to work as well. The S.S. officer notices this and whips him 25 times Elie now has to prove him self that he still can work otherwise he will he killed. Elie's father was also written down during the inspection but proved himself worthy the second time. I would say the other Jews are fighting with each other to be better then the others to stay alive and keep working in the camps.

The main conflict in my book mayhem and madness is that thee main character bailey has found his dads old supervillan suit and finds out that his dad has been kidnapped and the way to find him is by doing his dads old job by robbing banks and so far he has been handling it really well, he did make some bad decisions but now he kind of has a handle of everything. 34. There are a few conflicts in the book Devils Within and one of the main ones is Nate struggling to overcome his past mistakes in order to move on. Nate did lots of things in his past that he regrets and make him sick to the stomach. He thinks of himself as a horrible person and wants to confess everything because he doesn't want to have to hide the truth from his friends. Nate struggles fitting in and being normal especially when he knows that he's being hunted by The Fort. When his thoughts start to take over he would go in the woods and once he started playing basketball that helped him too. Every decision Nate makes has him questioning himself which can sometimes leads him to make irrational decisions. Nate thought about telling his story anonymously for a while because it was eating at him inside so when a reporter reached out to him looking for a story he gave it to her. The story ended up exposing his location and he was found by the people he was running from and he then knew he messed up.

    1. The main character in your book and the main character in mine both need to basically start over and start things that they should've already done but did not get the chance to do so.

  35. In my book "The girl that was supposed to die, the main conflict is trying to figure out whether or not Katie (the main character) was kidnapped or had something like amnesia. Katie is involved in this, Ty (The guy she met at McDonalds after she escaped the cabin) and James (Ty's roommate). Katie tried to go to the police, but they automatically did not believe her, she has been staying with TY and James trying to figure it all out. This conflict adds to the storyline because it is a murder mystery and the whole book is about trying to figure out what happened to her.

  36. A conflict in my book Snow Falling is between Josephine and Penelope they are arguing over a man and Penelope thinks Josephine is just digging for Rakes money a rich hotel owner by pretending to be pregnant with his kid even though Penelope divorced him years ago when he was sick with some tropical disease. Josephine makes it clear that even if he is in the baby's life, she doesn't want money thrown at her and she wants to work for her money. Saying she doesn't need Rake. It adds to the story with Josephine cheating when seeing Officer Cadden Martin get touchy with his partner. Josephine wanted to with Rake because there was history from years ago giving a spark so she went for it, and she thinks it's a sign to have the baby because he was told he could never after having the tropical disease.
