Blog Response #11

When an author writes a book, he or she has a purpose as to why he/she is sharing this story.  This lesson or theme plays out throughout the book.  Share what you believe the author's purpose was for writing this book.  What lesson do you feel he/she wanted you to learn?  (In responding to other's blog posts, try to connect your theme with other's books.)

  1. Elie Weisel wrote this book to give us the perspective of the Jews during the holocaust. He wrote the book in a way where it is very graphic, and you can visualize what you are reading. A theme that plays throughout the book is them having to go camp to camp. They are in a camp for a little while and then the battle front begins to get closer. This makes everyone in the camp have to leave it so they are not caught up in the line of fire. A lesson that the book tries to teach you is that life can be very challenging, but you have to keep pushing through.

    2. My book is not very graphic but you can kind of visualize what you're reading. My book takes place in a forest rather than a camp. My book also has a lesson like that that life can be challenging but you'll make it through it.

    3. I am reading the same book and I feel the same way about violence being very graphic and how you can visualize what is happening and going on throughout the camp. I feel like the book gets really interesting when they start running to the next camp because Elie and his dad look like there about done but they push through and go in a little hut and hide and they rest up .

  2. The book i read was The Boy at the top of the Mountain. i think the main purpose of why the author wrote the book was to tell you how things were during the Holocausts. But he gives you knowledge based off hitler's side. He tells the readers how people who lived with hitler and people who were around him did not realize the things he was doing wrong until it was to late. Their was a young boy throughout the novel who lived with his aunt in Hitler's house. The boy named peter became very close with hitler and he was only seven at the time. By the time he grew 15 he realized that everything hitler did was wrong and being Peter grew up with hitler he too started to be like him. Peter became very selfish and thought everything revolved around him. Not till the end of the book did peter realize all the harm caused to others and had to liive the rest of his life knowing he was by hitler's side through all of it. i think the book had a great impact proving that being selfish and rude to innocent people gets you nowhere in life.

  5. In A Dog's Way Home the author's purpose to writing it was to show you a dog's point of view. He wanted the lesson to be about how animal control can have very rude employees and to always take care of your dog because there is rude people in the world. I also think he wanted to explain how well a dog can find it's way home even if it is miles away from home. He also wanted to show how some dogs are very good at being service dogs. Like for example, Bella was an emotional support dog to Lucas's mom. She also went to therapy sessions to help the people relax. I think he also wanted to show how hard it is to survive in the forest all alone without any help or anything.

    3. In my book, the hardships that the main character faces is more of a bigger/physical threat. In Dracula, the main character (Van Helsing) is struggling to hunt down and kill the antagonist (Count Dracula) after he caused two murders in London, so he teams up with his friends to to help him with the task. While the hardship is trying to kill a paranormal threat, the characters do eventually overcome said threat, somewhat similar to your book.

  7. In the book The Rolling Stones the authors purpose for writing the book is that it tells you about the life of the rolling stones and what problems they ran into. The lesson I believe they wanted to learn and tech the readers about is that there were naughty people back in the day before they came famous. Like one of the singers was an abusive father and a husband in his early days. Also, from being lowlifes to performing and earning millions of dollars. Making them very wealthy.

  9. In running loose the purpose is to show the reader what its like to be in high school on a football team with a big bully. I think he writes this book because he wouldnt want anyone in real life to go through this. I think the lesson the author wants to teach the readers is to help a kid who is being bullied like carter did when boomer was beating on louie

    4. in my book the main character Hap was sent to a Pow camp. so i can connect to your purpose by thinking of the German soldiers as the big bully of the pow camp and the football team being all the young airman that were captured. these young men also worked together like a football team against the big bully.

    5. There are parts in my book that can connect with the bulling aspect of your book. In mine it talks about what that person who was getting bullied had to do in order to their profession. For each person that got bullied in mine had a different way to overcome the challenges and find a way of success.

    6. My book also deals with someone learning to overcome a big threat, although it's more of a supernatural threat that feeds on the blood of the living and can mind control anyone into doing his bidding. But, in a way, antagonists can be seen as bullies. In Dracula, the main character by the name of Van Helsing, is trying to hunt down and kill Dracula after he killed two people in London.

  10. In the garden of beasts the main purpose of the story is to tell a story about how outsiders view the Nazis early state of government. This book is based before WW2 and before all the Jewish oppression. The author describes how much of the US government was totally oblivious for not believing there leader over seas which in fact is the main character. The author also tries to tell us how much women were prized in the Nazi government because they were used as sexual tools as it shows with Martha going around with other men, marrying some of them but immediately goes behind there back and cheats. The lesson i think the author wants us to learn is you may not be respected or be trusted by your country but when your all done they finally see what the truth is and they forgive you but it depends on how you take it.

  11. Chris Crutcher. The purpose of him sharing this story is you never know what someone can be going through. When his brother shot himself and he started talking to Jennifer he didn't know anything about what Jennifer had been going through. Come to find out Jennifer has been getting raped by her step dad JB. She was scared to say anything and instead she lets it happen and try's to take her mind away from it while it is happening. I believe Chris crutcher intended one of the purposes of this book to be that even if all odds are against you if you don't believe in something you don't have to follow the rest of your peers, classmates, or teammates he wants you to be a leader not a follower. An example of this is when coach lednecky ordered a illegal hit on Washington and boomer put him in the hospital Louie told the refs what happened then he quit the football team.

  13. There is a connection almost anyone can make with the story The Catcher in the Rye. J.D. Salinger focused on feelings and thoughts he too must have had when he was a teenager about to go into the adult world. By targeting this specific point in life he can really connect to people. He goes over feeling the superficiality of interactions with others, sexuality, the importance of empathy, and self discovery. My main takeaway from the book is to be an honest person and that empathy is the solution to the "phoniness" that Holden hates about society. I feel that's what Salinger wanted people to takeaway from the book, by spreading this message I feel Salinger was trying to make society less superficial and more empathetic.

The purpose of the book that the author wanted to get to the readers is i think he wanted to show how you can not get deterred or frustrated and not giving up. and he shows what can be accomplished when you keep trying and don't give up at the first sign of defeat. that's why i think the purpose is to not give up or be deterred or frustrated from a little mishap

  15. "To realize one's destiny is a person's only obligation." this is the quote on the back of the book and this is what I think is the authors purpose is. The Alchemist is the story of a boy becoming a man and pursuing his personal legend (Destiny) throughout the book the boy learns of the world around him and the language of the world and though those are good parts of the story I think that the back cover has the best description for what the book actually stands for.

  16. The girl that was supposed to die, April henry was the author, I believe her purpose of writing this book was to explain to everyone that anything can happen at any moment whether it is a bad thing or a good thing. 17. The author's purpose for my book The Silent Patient is to not always trust the narrator's perspective. This book was written from 1st person perspective so throughout the book you're forced to believe the narrator and trust them which makes it hard to challenge them. After finishing the book, I realized I should've never trusted him because although he was portrayed as the protagonist, he was indeed the antagonist. I learned to now question the narrator.

    1. My book "The Catcher in the Rye" also follows a narrator that might have a biased view on the world. He views everybody as fake and is cynical towards everyone. By the end of it he ends up in a mental hospital challenging if we should have trusted his judgement of things all along.

  18. I read an Iowa pilot named Hap. Norman Rudi wrote this biography and when I read up about him I learned that he goes around interviewing interesting veterans to write his books about. I would say the lesson hinted at throughout the whole story is "trust in loyalty". loyalty is what kept Hap sain throughout his time in the POW camp. he trusted in America that they would win the war and set him free. his wife was also very loyal to him. as since he was so high up in the army he was very busy. for a couple of years hap and his wife jane would only see each other two days out of the month. but through all that she stayed loyal to him, and ended up happy and retired together. I think Rudi the author did a good job writing this biography to tell a story of loyalty.

  19. In Wake, the purpose is don't judge a book by its cover. The main character Janie has a gift that no one knows about and is considered the "weird" kid since she has always been to herself and does not have any friends. She is treated like she is different her whole life well because she is, and her bully Melinda Jeffers kept her on her toes while making her feel bad about herself. Janie overcame her quiet self by the end of the book and learned how to break out of her episodes. Never treat someone like their different even if they are, always treat others with respect because you never know their story or what they are going through.

  20. the authors purpose of the book a girl in pieces is to show that sometimes no matter how hard you try and get over something it doesn't always work, and it can just become a cycle against yourself. My book is written from the point of present moment, the flashback, and finally the view from her mind, also note that it isn't in chapter form rather it is in a journal type set up. As i finished the book i came to realize that the character Charlie was battling more than she could bare which led to her self-harming. i think my character learned that you don't always have to go through things alone and that it is okay to talk or ask for help without feeling ashamed or gulity for it and also that you are never alone there is always someone who has gone through or experienced some of the same things.

  22. I think the lesson the author of Pushing The Limits wants her readers to learn is that everyone struggles behind closed doors. A lot of times kids our age in high school are quick to judge because not a lot of people come from broken homes or have trauma as a kid. Once you grow up I feel like mentally adults become a lot more mature when judging a book by its cover. Kids in high school take a lot for granted especially if they've never had to worry about split homes, financial problems, substance abuse, or death of loved ones. once you go through things like that you mentality and aspect on life matures. Through Pushing The Limits and the environment that Noah and Echo share in high school its easy to see that a lot of kids get "stereotyped" by what's on the outside, but the more you get to know someone the more there is on the inside that people don't realize.

  23. In the book Trust the Grind, i believe Jeremy Bhandari's main purpose was to inspire people. With sharing interviews he had with former athletes and what they did to get to where they were is a huge part. I feel that having these interviews, he became inspired and wanted to share that feeling with others. I feel the biggest inspiration in this story was the last chapter with Manny Pacquiao. He came from one the worst lives a kid could come from, having to live in cardboard boxes or public gyms. He started his boxing career at a young age but still not having much money or that different of living situations. When he decided to try out his talents in America, it took him awhile to find someone to train him. Once he did he ended up becoming one of the greatest boxers in the world. He was then living in a mansion in Beverly Hills completely changing the living experiences he had as a child. He didn't stop there though. He ended up becoming the Senator of his home Country in the Philippines. He wanted to help those who were in need and decided that was the best way to help and inspire people.

  24. Lucy Score wrote the book Things We Left Behind as an example of how it is ok to forgive and forget. Sloane and Lucian have a long past of tough love that caused lots of hurt on both sides. They spent their late teens into their twenties even some of their thirties holding on to something that happened 20 years ago. They both still cared for each other but hated what each other had done years ago. The grudge they held against each other just caused more hurt and energy. At the end of the book they let it all go and finally realized that what they had done for each other all of those years ago actually meant more good then bad. They moved on from the past, fell in love and built a family together.

  25. I believe that the purpose of my book, Adrift by Paul Griffin, was to show the readers what survival looks like and how people can change so much when they go through starvation and what it can do to their mind. For example, they had been stranded in the middle of the ocean for 8 days and Jojo could not handle it anymore because he was so mentally drained and he jumped into a swarm of sharks in the water. They would eat anything they could find and even considered eating each other. They mostly lived off of a few rotten fish and some water from a type of water purifier they made for the ocean. I think the lesson the author was trying to teach me was how lucky and grateful we should be to have what we have. I think he wanted to show also how we should also think about how easily these things can happen and how we should prepare ourselves.

The lesson is you always have a place to go back to when you feel homesick even if it isn't your house but the place where you feel at peace at. One side character of the book Frank was mentally abused by his dad his whole childhood and made up a cabin in the wood and made other people believe it was there because that was where he felt the safest.

  27. DDay by Deborah Hopkinson was one of my favorite books i have read. I believe the author wrote this book to go more in depth of what are soldiers went through. I also feel she wrote this book to not only show what they went through but they should never be forgotten and we should take anyhting for granted because they are the reason we are in the country in the world. Through out my book it dives in depth of the great war invasion in history. America and its allies planed out a strategic amphibious attack to take down Hitler's German army. Many of the lessons the author wants us to take from that day are timeless. A high level of physical fitness was needed to move through the difficult terrain. Soldiers had to be experts in marksmanship and maintaining their weapons. The ability to call for indirect fires was essential to enabling maneuver.

  28. I believe the theme/lesson for Falling Kingdoms is that loss can be harsh but it can be overcome.
One of the main characters, Cleo, has suffered the loss of 3 different people who she cared about, her sister, her father, and her love. The fact that this book is only the first in a series hints that Cleo will survive from her suffering, and I believe it shows to the readers that whatever they may be going through, it will pass.

  29. In Dracula, the main conflict is a battle between good and evil. Dracula and his forces are creatures of the night while the main characters are normal people caught up in this strange affair of the supernatural. I believe that the author, Bram Stoker, wrote Dracula with the message that people with power cannot always be trusted. Count Dracula is a wealthy figure in Transylvania and is known throughout the lands, many of the villagers around Transylvania are shown to fear him and even shudder upon hearing his name. Dracula is often seen as charismatic and controlling, using his sexual prowess to get what he wants. Throughout the story, he consumes the blood of two innocent women, turning them into his own undead slaves. Much like how many people in power will use their status/money for their own personal gain, Dracula uses his paranormal abilities to mind control people into doing his bidding. A character by the name of Renfield is an example of this, Renfield is a mentally ill man who has an undying loyalty to Dracula that lasts until Dracula's presence is more known to the main characters. Dracula doesn't just consume blood to survive, he also consumes blood for his own gain.

He has to go through a lot of struggle and set backs and the message that the author is sending is that no matter what happens or what your going through you have to keep pushing forward and keep striving to succeed because eventually you will succeed. Bailey has setbacks and failures but he keeps going and eventually he finds his father and he does succeed but now he faces a greater challenge.

In my book "Night" by Elie Wiesel I think that the authors purpose of writing the book was to share his story and inform the world on the hardships he went through and the terrible things that happened in the holocaust. I think that there was not so much a lesson in the book but rather an impactful story through him telling his life story that time. It is a book that everyone should read just because of how well Elie recalls what he went through and how he explains it all in great detail.

  32. In the book "Night" I believe the author Elie Wiesel's point was to show how cruel the holocaust was and how throughout their experience in camp, they changed. Elie starting questioning his faith and then losing it, how the men at first would try to help each other out and then in the end as they were more desperate, and on the brink of starvation, turned on each other. I think the lesson maybe I take away is to never give up. When it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel to hang in there.

    1. I agree they had no hope to hold on to and ultimately no reason to fight but yet they still did and they pushed through till the end and it ended up paying off when they were finally rescued.

    2. This is similar to the foundation of what Dante goes through in Dante's Inferno, despite seeing the horrors and disgusting punishments that come from doing sin. He continued his journey to try and see his wife Beatrice. Even if in the end he didn't actually meet up with his wife, what he has gone through and seen made him more experienced, and gave him an idea on how bad sinning actually is.

  33. i feel Lane Walker wrote this book to show readers that the most important thing in life is family, because in this book in the beginning the 2 sides of the family didn't get along and they contently fought one side stealing stuff from the other and just being straight up jerks but at the end of the book the two sides of the family finally got along and the whole reason they finally eventually got along is because the treasure the boys were looking for had a message on it and it meant family is forever and once both sides saw that they became family again not enemies anymore.

  34. In my book "If You Tell", the author wrote this book about a true story murder that happened in Raymond, Washington. The author's purpose in writing this book was not only to tell about the horrific abuse and murder that happened but he also teaches the reader the central theme of resilience and strength of sisterhood. The author tried to show how despite the girls enduring extreme abuse and psychological trauma from the hands of their mother, Shelly Knotek, the three girls managed to maintain a secret way of communication with one another and be able to support each other during it all. Their shared experiences forged an ultimate bond between the sisters. It also shows how they support one another in moments of despair and overcoming their mother's control.

  35. In the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel, he tells a really important story about how treating people with hate and not caring can take away their humanity. Elie was a Jewish teenager during the Holocaust, and he shows how the Nazis treated people so badly that they felt less than human. The author wrote this book to make sure we never forget what happened during the Holocaust and to encourage us to stand up against unfair treatment. Elie wants us to learn from the past, be kind to others, and stop bad things from happening again. "Night" teaches us to speak up against unfairness, care about each other, and remember the people who went through tough times.

  36. In American sniper the author Chris Kyle writes about his life as a Navy Seal. I think the purpose of this book is just to look back at his great accomplishments and give people a sense of what his life was like during these wars. I don't think there was much of a lesson as it was more of a life story of a amazing sniper fighting for his country.

  37. The purpose of "Dante's Inferno," is exploring the nature, and process, of sin. When the main character Dante trudges through the 9 Circles of Hell, he sees the different ways in which sin affects where you end up in Hell. The first circle equates to Pagans, and those who don't know of, or haven't accepted God, the second circle inhabits people who are overwhelmed with lust. Moving onto the third circle, it houses those who bear the sin of Gluttony, fourth the sin of Greed, fifth the sin of Wrath with the Sullen underneath them. Sixth circle has heretics, seventh is violence, eighth is fraudulence which includes Seducers, Flatterers, Simoniacs, Diviners, the Corrupt, Hypocrites, Thieves, False Counselors, Divisiveness, and Falsifiers. The ninth is based around Treachery, including betraying of Kin, betrayers of Country, betrayers of Guests, betrayers of Benefactors. While the punishments of some of these aren't incredibly terrible, they do last for eternity, so make sure your choices are redeemable if you believe Hell exists.

  38. In my book The False Prince even though the book is fantasy still I believe that the message the author left is to not give up when the circumstances are not good, Even though Sage wasnt learning and wasnt liked very much he still came out on top in the end. And Tobias worked to save his life the entire time which is what keeps him alive in the end. The last boy fought for his life to win. so I believe the message is to never give up.

  40. I think the author S.F. Henson wrote the book Devils Within because they wanted to prove that change is possible. It doesn't matter where you come from or how you were raised but it matters how you respond to these situations. Nate was born and taught to be a Nazi and a racist but he knew he didn't want to live like that. Once he moved away he tried his best to change how he thinks and treats people. He came from a toxic household but wont let that stop him from being a better man. It taught me to stay persistant and don't listen to the hate from others.

  41. In the book Scythe only way to die is to either perish in such a manner that nobody is left behind, or to be gleaned by a Scythe. Throughout the novel, Shusterman shows that this lack of permanent consequences has stripped many people of their purpose. They have a skewed perspective on life's importance. He is trying to say if you don’t value your life the people who care about you.
